Friday Cat Blog: A Picture Story Of Sorts
December 1st, 2006 by Kelley
Poor Gunther hasn’t had a post in a couple of weeks. Poor, poor kitty.
Anyway, to make up for it, today’s post will include a picure story of sorts. The title, “Cat Meets Darkling Beetle. Cat Loses.”
First Encounter
If that isn’t an evil eye, I don’t know what is.
Nothing Wrong With A Little Caution
Does It Smell?
I can answer that for the cat…yes. This tenebrionidae beetle, when threatened, takes a defensive stance that kind of looks like a hand stand. Then, the beetle emits a noxious odor from the tip of the abdomen.
Beetle On The Defense, What Does Gunther Think About That?
Beetle Takes All, Cat = Sore Loser
Gunther took about 10 steps back. Apparently he didn’t want to play anymore after their brief exchange.
Great picture story! I have seen my cat exhibit the same behavior. Evidently other species of beetles emit an odor because most beetles that temporarily inhabit our house are thoroughly ignored. We have an old cat and he’s acquired some widom with age. However, when it comes to spiders or scorpions, my cat loves to play and eat both.
Kelley, as an amateur photographer, I love that last picture with the beetle in focus and the cat blurry but dominating the composition. Very nice.
Thanks Laura and Jay!
I think Gunther likes posing in front of the camera, so that of course helps the friday cat blog.
