Snow Fleas and Snow Flakes
March 20th, 2007 by Kelley
I am in my (not so much) home away from home…upstate NY for some more field work. I’ll pretty much be living here through August now. Someone throw me a pity party.
But while out in the stupid cold snow I did spot these cute snow fleas (aka springtails)
And a pretty (out-of-focus) snowflake….
And here is a mystery larva….anyone know what family it belongs to?
I just don’t think bugs can ever be cute, your snow flea is just plain nasty! How the hell did you get a microscope on that snow flake and take a pictue of it?! That is awesome! And I am going to guess your larva belongs to the Partridge Family, I have wagered $Texas (with a dollar sign)…name that SNL skit!
The snow flake was taken with my macro function on my camera, I’m not trekin’ through the woods with a microscope on my back
The snow fleas are *cute* because they are like a mm big and spring up all over the place when disturbed.
And the wager on $Texas has to be Jeopardy
How’s it being back in the grind at school? Do you need any supplies?
School is killing me! I just don’t like it…I have tried to be positive but it is not working! I guess I am just too school for school!
This is not a comment but more of a question, “Where do these so called snow fleas come from?” I see these things all around, From trees, roofs of homes, Where? And these are on very mild days even after it’s been freezing cold out the day before.???
They live in the soil or leaf litter. They are pretty hardy.
