Awesome pic, hey what’s the difference between a kestrel, a hawk, and a falcon?

Well I’m some other people who frequent this blog could answer in more detail than I can but basically all three are raptors. A kestrel and ‘falcon’ are in the same family (Falconidae). The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America (I think). Hawks are typically split into 2 major groups, Buteos and Accipiters. Buteos, like the Red-Tailed Hawk, have broad wings and short tails. Accipiters are slimmer and have long tails, like the Sharp-Shinned Hawk. They like to stay hidden in the woods.

I’m sure someone else will have a better answer to this question ;)

In other ‘bird’ news though, the thunder birds were practicing today for the air show this weekend at the base.
